Abstract | The purpose of this study is to examine Tennessee Whig opposition to the expansionist policy of the national Democrats, and in particular to the policies of James K. Polk. This opposition is best demonstrated in Tennessee Whig reaction to the annexation of Texas, the Oregon boundary question and the Mexican War. Special emphasis is given to Tennessee Whig Congressmen and their speeches opposing expansion. |
