Description | A history thesis submitted to the Faculty of the College of Graduate Studies in partial fulfillment of the degree of Master of Arts. |
Abstract | This thesis traces the development in Middle Tennessee of the Colonial Revival movement from 1928 to 1948 through the study of the exterior design and ornament, interior design and decoration, and landscaping of selected homes. This study explores in depth three specific homes: the Mary Felice Ferrell House, Rippavilla, and The Hibbetage. These three properties reflect the diversity of Colonial Revival domestic architecture. in Middle Tennessee. The dwellings were built of different materials, according.to different designs, and at different times; Differences in thelr owners and their owner's goals for their homes also help highlight the social and cultural choices behind the decisions of those who adapted Colonial Revival designs to their houses. This thesis also includes a guide to assessing the historical and architectural significance of Colonial Revival dwellings. It will demonstrate that the Colonial Revival movement, with its mixing of old and new, and its wide acceptance among Americans, was a significant era in American architectural and cultural history. |
