Abstract | Today's archivists are focusing on the digitization of analog records and placing them online. In their haste to provide these digital surrogates to online researchers, archivists are omitting important contextual information: provenance and original order. As these two principles form the foundation of archival theory and practice, the author has concerns about the effect that the omission of these principles has on the usefulness of records and the understanding of those who use them tor research. The author examines the current literature of both the use of archival records by researchers, especially historians, and the contextualization of digital surrogates, finding that the majority focuses on the how-to aspects of digitization and is relatively silent on the issue of including information about provenance and original order. The author also analyses the online web presence of archives in the state of Tennessee (local government and four-year public university archives).
