Abstract | During the New Deal period, President Franklin D. Roosevelt, as part of unemployment relief, gave thousands of American artists commissions to paint murals in post offices across the country. These paintings present an interesting preservation problem. Because of their location, murals have experienced various stages of deterioration due to pollution and decay over the last fifty years. The security of these paintings is questionable and some have been lost and destroyed due to lack of preservation planning. These paintings are valuable assets of American cultural history and deserve proper care. They are the first artifacts of a government aware of the need for Americans to be exposed to art and each scene tells a story about the American government, the American art world, and the public that received them half a century ago... |
