Abstract | One of the most fascinating features of the existing early historic landscape of middle Tennessee is the persistence of building techniques and architectural styles which belong more appropriately to the colonial period rather than to the Age of Jackson. Patterns of architecture which were popular in the strongholds of Virginia and among East Coast aristocracy of the mid-eighteenth century appear in middle Tennessee and persist throughout the first half of the nineteenth century.
