Abstract | The American South has been categorized as the most violent section of the United States. Experts have described many forms of southern violence and advanced many theories about it. The Burns and Morgan families of Rutherford County, Tennessee, experienced four homicides between 1893 and 1911. In doing so, they produced a family feud, a form of violence not commonly documented in the lowland South. A subculture of violence, possible over dependence on family relationships, the practice of carrying guns, and excessive alcohol consumption contributed to the family's problem. Those factors also provide confirming evidence for the observation of some of the experts. |
