Abstract | The death of Meriwether Lewis, leader of the Lewis and Clark Expedition and, at the time of his death, Governor of the Upper Louisiana Territory, has been shrouded in controversy for more than a century. While some writers claim Lewis committed suicide, others insist he was murdered. The truth lies hidden on a lonely, barren ridge in Middle Tennessee... Tennessee, where Lewis stopped on October 10, 1809 to spend the night. Folklore and legend are the result of a mystery that has exasperated and puzzled many an observer in the last 169 years.
