Abstract | As interests in cultural history and social history increased over the last twenty five years, the lives and problems of ordinary people received more emphasis. Historians began to look beyond major events and public persons and, instead, to examine previously unexplored issues. The housing crisis that confronted veterans of World War II (WWII) when they returned home serves as such an issue. This thesis examines the housing crisis of the 1940s, focusing on the veterans while recognizing that civilians faced the same problem. Specifically, this thesis examines the depths of and response to the housing crisis of the 1940s in order to understand its economic and social impact. Nashville, Tennessee, serves as a microcosm through which this national problem can be examined... |
