Description | A history thesis submitted to the Faculty of the College of Graduate Studies in partial fulfillment of the degree of Master of Arts |
Abstract | The purpose of this paper is to discuss the history of the Nashville architectural firm of Marr and Holman, focusing on their buildings in the period 1929 to 1940. An attempt has been made to place the Art Deco style in an historical perspective, showing its evolution from European avant-garde to the Paris Exposition des Arts Decoratifs. The style's progression to the United States and its subsequent evolution into a distinct American expression are also demonstrated. After a short history of the firm's origins and early work, the thesis documents the firm's Nashville buildings from 1920 to 1940, placing them in an historical and cultural context. Special attention is given to the impact of the automobile on urban building types and the effect of the Great Depression on Nashville architecture and architectural firms. Sources consulted include microfilm newspapers, Marr and Holman records in the Tennessee State Archives, and numerous general works on the topics of architecture, urban history, public works, and local history. |
