Abstract | This thesis examines the difficulties associated with the preservation and protection of Native American sacred landscapes. It does not attempt to be comprehensive, but instead uses specific sites in the western half of the United States as case studies and highlights the issues raised by them. In order to create a context from which to make suggestions for the preservation and protection of Native American sacred sites, a clear definition of the nature of sacred places is imperative. The first chapter attempts to define the term "sacred" in terms of an Indian belief system. Native American origin myths, a circular sense of time, and the nature of sacred geography represent important components of this definition. Examples of Navajo sacred sites in the Four Corners area of Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Utah illustrate the profound connection of Indian religion to landscape and personal identity. The types of Native American sacred sites as delineated by authors such as Vine Deloria Jr. and Andrew Gulliford are also discussed in this section... |
