Abstract	After the Civil War, formerly enslaved people used community to rebuild their lives in freedom. However, many of these communities that formed outside of urban areas are very poorly documented and difficult to research. Cemetery, located in the ninth district of Rutherford County, Tennessee, is an example of a rural African American community created during the Reconstruction era. Its unique relationship with the federal government due to the adjacent national cemetery provides the community with more visibility in public records, making it a useful starting point for furthering research into the formation and existence of these hamlets and neighborhoods across the South.
