Abstract | The Nashville Chattanooga and St. Louis Railroad created new towns, new wealth, and new organizations of landscape in Middle Tennessee based on the tenets and requirements of the market, and subsequently confronted many aspects of life in Middle Tennessee households. This thesis examines the significance of the railroad's role in altering the lifestyles and landscape of Middle Tennessee from a more communal precapitalistic society, to one dominated by long distance markets and capitalism. The research goes beyond the technological and administrative aspects of this railroad, which other authors researched in the past, studying the railroad as a harbinger of the industrial age.
