Abstract | The findings of this study, concerning the rise of the Ku Klux Klan in Middle Tennessee, revealed that the origin of the Klan was accidental. The transformation of this social club was the result of political, social, and economic conditions following the Civil War. By revealing some facts about the lives of the known members of the Klan, it was discovered that a majority of the Klansmen were respected businessmen of their communities. When the existence of the Klan in Middle Tennessee came under attack by the government, the Grand Wizard ordered its disbandment throughout Middle Tennessee. The Klansmen followed the wishes of the Grand Wizard and destroyed their regalia and records. |
