Abstract | The United States, from its remote rural areas to its large metropolitan areas, is a nation of communities. A study of a community reveals both those characteristics that form the unique identity of a community and those bonds the community shares with other towns, states, and regions that comprise a nation. Because the teaching of local history has been neglected in the classrooms of this nation for most of the twentieth century, many American citizens are ignorant of those heritage and cultural resources that link local history with national history. This study was undertaken and written to inform average citizens about those processes necessary to the discovery, interpretation, and preservation of a community's local heritage resources with the hope that such a study will lead citizens to appreciate the rich heritage resources available at the local level and to understand how a local community contributes to the continuity of life in a nation. The small, southeast Tennessee town of Winchester, a town of no known importance to most people was the model community for this study... |
