Abstract | The Bedford County town of Bell Buckle provides an example of three of the key purposes of historic preservation: 1) to assist in easing the feeling of rootlessness while enhancing a sense of community, 2) to provide an avenue to understanding history through local material culture, and 3) to provide an economically and environmentally sound approach to modern life. Bell Buckle, a former railroad boom town, was transformed during the 1970s from a-virtual ghost town to an attractively restored arts and crafts community with a growing population. The historical and sociological factors leading to this transformation were examined during a 1981 humanities project in Bell Buckle for the purpose of stimulating citizen discussion of the recent changes and their implications for the future of the town... |
