Abstract | Baseball emerged in the 1880s as the National Pastime in America and played a significant role in the changing attitude of Americans toward leisure. This thesis examines the beginnings of baseball in Nashville and the factors that contributed to its initial popularity and success. First, the inaugural professional season explains how Nashville became a baseball city and chronicles the opening season in 1885. Second, because of financial troubles and league instability, baseball in the next fifteen years experienced tumultuous times. Third, the. combination of a winning team, strong league leadership, and a supportive press stabilized the Nashville baseball team and ensured the survival of baseball in Nashville for many years. Further study is needed to show reasons for the success or failure of baseball in other Southern cities in the late nineteenth century. However, this thesis shows that baseball succeeded in Nashville because of its high populace, its transportation systems, a helpful press, and a shift in attitudes toward leisure activities in America. |
