Abstract | Cedars of Lebanon State Park exists today as the site of the nation's largest stand of red cedar trees and as a popular recreational park for the people of Middle Tennessee. However, prior to President Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal, the land on which the park is located was bleak: the soil was thin and susceptible to drought, cedar trees were depleted, and the inhabitants were finding it difficult to support themselves. The Works Progress Administration, the Civilian Conservation Corps, and other federal agencies stepped in to repair the land by renewing the forest. Unlike other state parks across Tennessee created by New Deal agencies, Cedars of Lebanon was created as a permanent conservation landscape. Equipped with only minimal recreational resources, it was hoped that the replenishment of the cedar forest would one day provide a suitable use for the landscape. Unfortunately, the successful reclamation of this landscape and the historical conservation ideals have been neglected by the state's overemphasis of the recreational aspects of the park. |
