Abstract | In the 1930s Andrew Lytle was one of the leading supporters of the Agrarian cause. His ideology was evident in the numerous essays he produced during this period. He urged southerners to return to a way of life where farming was practiced by the majority of the population. However, his own experience in trying to return to such a society, convinced him that the South had lost the sense of community that he had experienced as a child. During the next two decades Lytle failed to produce any agrarian essays and his fiction indicated a belief that it was foolish for an individual to make an isolated attempt to recapture the past. After 1960, Lytle began a period of reflection. He reminisced fondly about his days as an Agrarian and once again promoted their philosophy. This updated version of the Agrarian doctrine sought to meet the challenges faced by modern society. |
