The nomination of Hackney Chapel was a result of .a study of rural AfricanAmerican churches by the Center for Historic Preservation at Middle Tennessee State University. The project was to develop a contextual history of signifiCant events, people, and architecture associated with said churches. For Tennessee's African Americans, no place is more important for community, history, and identity than their churches. Especially in the countryside, churches, often with adjacent cemeteries and/or schools, are extremely signifiCant places to study and document African-American culture and heritage. The project is an on-going effort to identify and document these special places. * The family members of Hackney Chapel will have a ceremony to celebrate this momentous occasion on October 7, 2000 at 1:00 p.m. You are hereby invited to attend this ceremony and offer words of support and/or congratulations.
