Jg The Center for Historic Preservation •~•~ Research and Public Service Since 1984 June 27, 2001 Mrs. Mattie Miliken 1245 Highway 18 Medon,~ 38356 Dear Mrs. Miliken: On behalf of the Center for Historic Preservation, thank you for the wonderful welcome you gave to our graduate students and me during our visit last week to Mt. Olivet Cemetery. The community support for this project was overwhelming and shows just how important this historic landmark is to the citizens of Jackson. We appreciate you arranging for such a special welcome and especially for allowing us to meet and interview Mrs. Jimmie Sue Johnson. Nancy Morgan, our graduate student who did the majority of the interview with Mrs. Johnson, is reviewing the slides and photographs we took and is doing library and internet research. She will be the primary author ofthe Mt. Olivet Cemetery National Register nomination with assistance from Dr. West and me. After she has begun work on the narrative descriptions we will plan another day to come by. At that time we can take any additional photographs/slides and do additional research in Jackson. I expect this visit will take place in late July. I am enclosing some of the heritage education materials we talked about while at the cemetery. These are included in a website created by a fellow staff person, Caneta Hankins, at the Center for Historic Preservation. This website is called The Heritage Education Network (THEN). It is designed to show teachers how to use local cultural and historic resources in their lesson plans for grades K -12. I have enclosed several copies of the flyer and book mark and one set of the pages to be found at the website. You may wish to pass the flyers on to area teachers to encourage them to use Mt. Olivet as a tool for teaching history, social studies, and many other subjects. We will be contacting you in July to make arrangements for a second visit. Thank you again for all your assistance.
