Barrs Chapel CME Church History Near the end of slavery in the year 1864 a slave owner by the name of John Barr died leaving the of his property to his son and two girls land acquired in a land grant. The son not being a tyrant and stem taskmaster did allow his slaves to worship. The church that is now known as Johnson's Chapel at that time was located on Brier Patch Road it was a small church with two windows and one door. Johnson's Chapel membership had outgrown the seating capacity in this small building. Land had been donated to build farther up the road near what is now Jones Bend Road. Mr. Barr being a deacon in the old church and owner of the property gave the building to his slaves to use. However all the older heads of the church always said, Maser Barr did not want his slaves driving his prize mules the distance up Briar Patch Road got together with other landowners who had slavers that would attend this church and moved the church on skits with 18 horses and mules to a little red clay hill that was donated by Mr. Barr with the stipulation that if the church ever went down the land would go back to its original owner. The church did survives, and was a refuge during the period after slavery during reconstruction many men who were born into slavery became landowners such as Henry Freeman born in 1863. His property is still in tact and still belongs to the second and third generations now As the years went by many families acquired land and became farmer however with little education their was always an opportunist around the comer, there were times when people would come around and say they were sent to collect the payment on the land and not being able to read, the farmer would pay the man and then have to make a double payment to prevent loosing the farm. A School was built here on this property between the church and cemetery prior to (Pictured Proof) 1906 just when it was built I can't say. Board of education documentation only goes back to 1926 however my Grandmother graduated from this school in 1917 1
