lf~ The Center for Historic Preservation • - ·•-• Research and Publtc Service Since 1984 July 21, 2006 Tommy Caldwell St. Mark United Primitive Baptist Church 518 Maury Hill Street Spring Hill, TN 37174 Dear Mr. Caldwell: We received your letter of]uly 8, and are concerned certainly about the conditlon of St. Mark's. As a National Register property (you may recall that it was one of several African-Ametican churches we added to the Register in 1998), the church certainly is worthy of rehabilitation. I contacted the Natjonal Trust for Historic Preservation's regional office in Charleston and they will have small grants available again in October when they receive their annual funding. If one was awarded to St. Mark's, this money could be used to stabilize the roof, as I understand that is a main concern right now. The Center would be glad to help with that request. Before moving ahead with this or any plans or actions, however, it would be useful to know the answers to a few questions including: do the members continue to meet there on a regular basis; could the building be used by the community if restored; who would be responsible for accepting donations of goods, services, and monies and seeing that the work is done accordingly and reporting accurately and regularly on same; and is there suppmt frmn the church and others in the community to see this building restored and used? Center staff could meet with you and others you think might help regarding the future of the church if you wish. This would be a meeting to answer these questions and then to discuss options. Please be in touch by phone (615/898-2947) if you want to proceed in this way with our assistance.
