The Center for Historic Preservation Box 80 • Middle Tennessee State University • Murfreesboro, Tennessee 37132 April 14, 1992 Lurline C. Lewellyng Box 284 Newbern, TN 38059 Dear Ns. Lewe 11 yng, Thanks so much for the informative packet on the history of the Newbern depot. It was good to see that your opening celebration for the first train went well. Sami Dietrich of the Chamber of Commerce also told me that Newbern put on a fine show that night. There wi 11 be much work to do with the nomination. The typical architectural description is about three pages, typed. The history statement probably should be about 4-5 pages, typed. You have given me some valuable information but we wi 11 need more. For instance, I would 1 ike to have the room dimensions, architect's name, and contractor's name from the blueprints, which I understand you have a copy of. Also, if you can send me a reduced copy of the blueprints that would be helpful to include with the final nomination. Next, came you send me any additional history on Newbern in the 1920s? What was happening in the town commercially that led the railroad to build such a fine new depot? Finally, I still need a copy of the city tax map which shows the location and property boundaries of the depot. I understand that the property is not taxed, but that is not why I wanted the map. The federal requirements of a National Register nomination demand that a copy of the local tax map be included with the nomination. Please forward me a copy when you have had an opportunity of putting together the history information I requested above. Sincerely, C~?Y~ Carroll Van West (615) 898-2947
