Lincoln Schoool, P i keville, Bl edso e County, TN VII. DESCRIPTION The Lincoln Schoo l is located on old State Highway 28 at the northern city limi t s of Pikev ille (1,771 population) in Bledsoe County, Tennessee. The prope rty consists of about one acr . and is flanked on the immediate s o u th by a mobile home park - and to the immediate nor t h by a commerc ial establishment. The former recreation area fo r the schoo l , h owever, is intact both to the front (east) and r e ar (west). A graveled circular drive defines the entrance to t he school whi le a c. 1960 plywood storage building (NC) sta nds at the we stern border of the nominated property. The architectural plans f or Lincoln School follow the standardized plan s for a f our teacher community school in Community School Plans, Bulle tin No. 3, published by the Julius Rosenwald Foundation in 1924. The frame school rests on a concrete foundation and i ts bracket-supported, Craftsmaninfluenced gable roof is cove r ed with tin, with interior brick chimneys at either gable end. Ti n was the original covering of the roof, but informants do n ot k now if the present roof was the one installed in 1925-26. The east, or primary, facade o f the Lincoln School contains three bays in its weathe rboarded wal l . A gable roof portico, minus the original Colonial Revival-in flue nced columns, stands over a recessed entry. No firm dat e is known for the removal of the Colonial Revival-in£luenced port ico. The recessed entry is decorated by a floor-to-ceil ing pressed tin, which informants believe was inst a lled at the ti me of construction or shortly thereafter. Flank ing either side of the recessed entry are matching bands o f five 6 o ver 6 double-hung windows. These retain their ori g inal hardwar e and over an estimated 80 percent of their original glass. Thr ee o riginal concrete steps lead to the original front paneled doub le-door, complete with original sidelights and tra nsom. The south elevat i on is a soli d weatherboard wall, with the exception of pai r ed ventilat io n grills located near the point in the gable roof and a centrall y l o cated pair of 6 over 6 windows. The southern br i ck interior ch imney is best viewed from this elevation.
