St. Mark is the oldest extant Primitive Baptist Church in Maury County and one of the oldest in the state. The congregation traces its history from 1866- 1872 and the current building is dated to no later than 1900. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In recent years the congregation has dwindled and the building is sorely in need of repairs. Primary consideration must be given to replacing the roof and stabilizing the building. A community fund raising effort this past fall raised $1000 and pledges of more money and services as well as a new plumbing for the entire building. Elder Tommy Caldwell is committed to reorganizing and bringing the congregation back, and civic clubs and other individuals have expressed an interest in utilizing the building and assisting with repairs and future maintenance if the building can be rehabilitated and made useable again. The Center for Historic Preservation, which prepared the nomination to the National Register, was invited to assist in this effort and is pleased to do so. Staff met with Elder Caldwell and others last month and is currently preparing a building assessment and phased schedule for repairs. We have also prepared an informational flyer to be used for education and fund raising , a copy of which is included.
