Mount Ararat Missionary Baptist Church Mount Ararat Missionary Baptist Church is located in the Sherman Heights Neighborhood of the Ensley Community. It was chartered in 1915 and has been in the same site at 1920 Slayden A venue since then. The old church was struck by lightning a:nd burned down in 1929. The present church was designed by Mr. Wallace Rayfield and built on the same. The original Rayfield structure was modified with brick veneer and an educational, administrative and fellowship wing added in 1953. During the Civil Rights Movement some members of Mount Ararat were active in the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights chapters. A cross was burned after a Monday night *: meeting at the church and the Pastor stopped all meetings at the church. The known members who were active in those meetings were: Bro . Mose Palmer---Officer Bro. DoUet Alexander Bro. Ulyses Williams Bro . Robert Travis Bro. Eugene Battle Sis. Alberta Williams Sis . Brazzie Smith Sis. Nora Bell Herd Sis. Velma Bush Sis. Alberta Thompson Sis. Mable Alexander Sis. Ardella Williams Other members involved in the marches in 1963 were : Sis. Gwendolyn Odom Sis. Patricia Threatt-Eaker Bro. James Black, Jr. Members jailed in the marches of 1963 were: Pastor Albert Bry,.$r Bro . Victor Blackledge, Jr. Bro. James Williams Of note is that Bro . Michael Tarrant was a member of the first class ofBlack children to integrate Ensley High School in 1967. Further information on the Civil Rights activities of the members of Mount Ararat Baptist Church is available from Bro .
