of the
church
and
cemetery
in
relation
to
New
Canton
Road
.
Historical Notes
Before
the
current
Lyons
Chapel
AME
Zion
Church
building
was
constructed
in
1954-1955
, there were
three
prior
church
buildings
; the
first
two
were
destroyed
by
arson
.
Originally
established
just
after
the
Civil
War
in
1869
by
Reverend
Robert
Russell
,
Lyons
Chapel
, then
known
as
New
Canton
AME
Zion
Church
, was
one
of the
first
AME
churches
in the
area
. The
original
church
building
was
built
on
land
donated
by
Frank
and
Maude
Price
with
many
of the
first
church
members
being
formerly
enslaved
people
. The
church
was
later
named
Lyons
Chapel
AME
Zion
,
after
Henry
L
.
Lyons
, a
former
enslaved
man
who
bought
his
freedom
.
According
to
field
notes
, the
oldest
grave
marker
in the
cemetery
,
located
next
to the
church
,
dates
back
to
1929
.
