Historical Notes
The
idea
for
Brown's
Chapel
originated
in
1870
when
formerly
enslaved
people
,
led
by
Bland
Brown
,
met
on
Brown's
farm
to
discuss
the
need
for their
own
church
.
Brown
then
spoke
with his
former
owner
,
Mr
.
Reed
,
who
gave
two
acres
of
land
for the
church
to be
built
upon
and
deeded
it
to
all
African
Americans
in
District
#2
.
Construction
of the
church
began
in
1873
and was
completed
in
1876
.
Booker
T
.
Washington
spoke
at the
church
in
1910
to
recruit
people
to
enroll
at
Tuskegee
Institute
. In
addition
to its
role
as a
church
, the
building
also
served
as a
school
for a
brief
time
during
the
twentieth
century
. The
congregation
eventually
decreased
and the
church
became
Antioch
Missionary
Baptist
Church
.
Institute
.
