Historical Notes
As
early
as
1788
, the
founder
of the
farm
,
Samuel
Henry
,
Jr.
, had
established
the
homestead
and
other
buildings
, and
planted
the
first
crop
. The
land
has been in
agricultural
production
since
this
time
.
Other
aspects
of the
landscape
include
trees
,
one
of
which
can
be
seen
in
early
images
of the
house
.
Trees
line
the
fences
that
separate
the
domestic
spaces
from the
agricultural
. The
fencing
and
field
patterns
were
established
in the
early
to
mid-nineteenth
century
. The
east
boundary
is
defined
by
Henry
Lane
which
follows
an
ancient
Native
American
path
. The
fence
that
divides
the
property
on the
north
side
follows
the
natural
features
of
Baker’s
Creek
. The
road
and
creek
have
served
as
traditional
boundaries
between
fields
since
the
farm
was
established
. A
natural
pond
lies
to the
southwest
of the
Henry
House
. The
pond
is
fed
by a
strong
spring
and
Baker’s
Creek
and has
always
been there.
Historically
,
bass
and
bluegill
filled
the
pond
, but
today
carp
and
mussels
predominate
.
