Historical Note
Camp
Forrest
,
which
opened
in
1941
, was
one
of the
largest
army
training
bases
in the
United
States
.
Infantry
and
ranger
units
trained
in
rural
manuevers
in the
Tennessee
countryside
before
shipping
out
to
Europe
. The
camp
also
served
as a
civilian
internment
camp
, the
first
in the
nation
, from
January-November
1942
, and
afterwards
as a
P.O.W
.
camp
that
housed
as
many
as
24,000
captured
German
army
soldiers
by the
end
of
World
War
II
.
It
was
converted
into an
air
engineering
development
center
in
1949
and
continues
as the
home
of
Arnold
Air
Force
Base
, an
advanced
training
and
engineering
facility
.
