Historical Note
The
home
food
supply
program
was
initiated
by
Tennessee
Governor
Prentice
Cooper
(1895-1969)
after
he
came
into
office
in
1939
as a
patriotic
means
by
which
citizens
could
help
the
economy
during
World
War
II
.
More
than
200,000
Tennessee
farm
families
signed
enrollment
cards
and
planted
gardens
to
boost
their
own
production
.
