Historical Note
Sculptor
Helen
Bullard
(Krechniak)
moved
to
Cumberland
County
,
Tennessee
, with her
writer
husband
from
Chicago
in
1934
. She was
both
a
chronicler
of
time
and
place
and an
active
craft
artist
. A
member
of the
Southern
Highland
Handicraft
Guild
from
1951
on,
Bullard
showed
sculptural
work
at
fairs
as
well
as the
more
popular
and
saleable
dolls
with
which
she
began
her
career
,
having
learned
to
carve
from
Polly
Page
in
Pleasant
Hill
. the
Southern
Highland
Handicraft
Fairs
,
which
began
in
1948
, were
held
twice
a
year
, at
different
locations
in the
mountain
region
,
including
Gatlinburg
,
Asheville
, and
Berea
.
According
to
historian
Garry
Barker
,
after
1960
the
October
Fair
was
held
in
Gatlinburg
.
Bullard
wrote
a
book
Crafts
and
Craftsmen
of the
Tennessee
Mountains
(1976)
in
which
she
featured
a
wide
range
of
Tennessee
artists
and
makers
who
contributed
to the
formation
and
flourishing
of the
studio
craft
movement
.
