Historical Note
The
seated
woman
in this
photograph
is
Marian
Heard
,
professor
of
crafts
and
design
at the
University
of
Tennessee
.
Heard
(1908-2003)
was
instrumental
in the
success
of the
summer
craft
programs
that she
helped
initiate
at the
Pi
Beta
Phi
Settlement
School
in
Gatlinburg
in
1945
.
When
Sevier
County
began
to
fund
public
education
in the
1940s
, the
members
of the
Pi
Beta
Phi
Fraternity
, a
women's
organization
that had
founded
the
school
to
educate
local
children
in
1912
,
turned
to the
University
of
Tennessee
for
assistance
in
establishing
a
summer
craft
program
at the
college
level
.
While
they would
continue
to
share
support
for the
public
Pi
Beta
Phi
Elementary
School
next
door
, this
new
direction
for the
residential
campus
met
immediate
success
and
led
the
way
to a
new
direction
for the
school
.
Marian
Heard
, a
craft
artist
herself
, was also
involved
in the
first
Southern
Highlands
Handicraft
Guild
Fair
,
which
was
held
on
Pi
Beta
Phi
grounds
in
1948
. In
1964
, the
Pi
Beta
Phi
Fraternity
voted
to
found
a
year-round
arts
and
crafts
center
with the
name
Arrowmont
and
invited
Heard
to
become
its
first
director
.
