Historical note |
Hazen's Brigade Monument stands in the midst of one of the first official Civil War graveyards, which was built on the battlefield soon after the battle of Stones River. Named after William Babcock Hazen (1830-1887), a West Point graduate who commanded the unit, it is believed to be the oldest intact Civil War monument. Built on the defense line held by the troops on December 31, 1862, the monument's location was selected by Captain A. Johnson of the 9th Indiana Infantry to honor those men of the 9th who held the crest. Hazen's Brigade also figured in the January 2 fighting. |
