[illegible]
Dear
sir
,
I
have the
honor
to
[illegible]
you
for the
purpose
of
urging
the
[illegible]
of
Mr
.
Douglas
and
wife
who
are
teaching
at
Smyrna
for
some
assistance
[illegible]
from this
bureau
. They have a
large
flourishing
school
[illegible]
about
one
hundred
and
seventy
five
pupils
which
they
teach
in a
house
that
is
none
too
comfortable
for a
cow
stable
. They have been in the
[illegible]
more
than a
year
and are
earnest
and
faithful
in their
work
and are
only
paid
a
[illegible]
by the
society
that
sent
them here.
I
think
about
Thirty
Five
Dollars
for
both
. The
Colored
People
were to
add
to this
amount
forty
dollars
per
month
which
they have
failed
to
do
and
Mr
.
Douglas
has
given
up
all
hopes
of
getting
any
further
assistance
from them. They
[illegible]
$120.00
before
mr
.
D
would
agree
to
[illegible]
and
continue
the
school
after
last
summers
vacation
. This
[illegible]
which
is
their
proportion
of their
months
salary
he will
probably
get
and
no
more
.
I
know
Mr
.
Douglas
to be
energetic
and
[illegible]
and that he would not
relinquish
his
endeavors
if there was any
possibility
of
getting
the
assistance
required
from the
colored
people
and
unless
we
can
come
to the
rescue
and
make
it
up
from the
fonds
of this
Bureau
I
am
afraid
we
shall
lose
his
services
.
Hoping
this
matter
will
receive
the
attention
it
needs
.
I
subscribe
myself
.
Very
Respectfully
