Excerpt from record |
"This has been an uncommonly quiet month. No outrages of gross charades have been committed. All is as peaceable as in any country in the United States. The late rebels are very bitter in their prejudices and denunciations of Congress and of the State Legislature, but carry their hatred no further than talk. It would not be safe for a republican to talk or discuss politics and [express] his views and sentiments with the same freedom that he would in the month, but if he will leave politics alone or only talk with those whom he knows agree with him he will get along without trouble. The Freedmen are having no trouble ion obtaining employment for the coming year. Many have rented land. Some have bought. All can obtain employment. They are much more independent this year than they have even been before. All have made money and are safe for this winter." |
