W. H. Tilford had Stephen Tilford (colored), a deaf-mute, declared insane. Stephen is taken away from his family against his will and sent to live with W. H. to perform labor without pay. Nelson notes that Stephen is able to use signs to tell him that he would "sooner cut his throat" than go back to working for W. H. Nevertheless Stephen is bound to W. H. for twelve months.
