Excerpt from record
"
Before
the
election
(on
the
3rd)
the
Ku
Klux
were
very
active
.
Negroes
were
warned
not to
vote
the
Republican
ticket
and were
told
that they would be
discharged
if they
did
so
. On the
day
of the
elections
the
Ex-rebels
took
possession
of the
polls
, and would not
let
those
who
were
going
to
vote
the
Republican
ticket
get
to them. In
many
instanced
the
Negroes
would
pretend
they were
going
to
vote
as
required
, and in this
very
way
succeeded
in
getting
to the
polls
, and would
thus
vote
as they
wished.
