Nelson’s
report
for
April
1868
describes
the
alleged
murder
of an
African
American
man
named
Grier
.
Grier
had
assaulted
an
alleged
prostitute
and
fled
the
scene
,
pursued
by
police
. His
body
was
found
the
next
day
lying
across
Lytle’s
Creek
,
near
Murfreesboro
, with his
head
on a
stump
and his
face
in the
water
.
Nelson
states
that the
official
version
of the
story
of
events
was that
Grier
tripped
as he was
running
from the
police
,
fell
and
hit
his
head
on the
stump
, was
stunned
by the
fall
, and
drowned
as he was
unconscious
.
Nelson
remarks
that he
does
not
believe
the
story
,
noting
that
Grier
was
treasurer
of a
benevolent
society
and was
believed
to have had
between
ninety
and
four
hundred
dollars
on his
person
.
Nelson
believes
Grier
was
murdered
and then
robbed
.
