report
lists
the
communities
with
Freedmen’s
Schools
,
societies
that
support
them, and
teacher
and
student
demographics
by
school
. The
document
concludes
with
statewide
statistics
and
state
official’s
comments.]
[Murfreesboro
‘I’
School
had
two
day
schools
and
one
night
school
. There was
one
Sabbath
School
with
200
pupils
. These
schools
opened
in
January
1864
. The
patron
is
listed
as
American
Friends
Universalist
Committee
. The
freedmen
owned
one
school
building
. There were
eight
teachers
,
six
white
and
two
‘colored.’
There were
180
male
students
and
198
female
students
enrolled
. The
preceding
report
reported
398
pupils
.
During
the
month
of
March
,
41
students
left
and
26
new
students
enrolled
.
Average
attendance
is
listed
at
255
with
216
students
always
present
.
Twenty-five
students
were
over
16
years
of
age
. The
document
further
lists
229
advanced
readers
.
One
hundred
and
thirty-one
students
spell
and
read
easy
lessons
.
None
of the
students
were
free
before
the
war.]

‘II’
School
had
one
day
school
. There was
one
Sabbath
School
with
189
pupils
. These
schools
opened
in
January
1867
. The
patron
is
listed
as the
Freedmen’s
Aid
Society
of the
Methodist
Episcopal
Church
.
One
school
building
was
partially
sustained
by the
freedmen
and they
owned
an
additional
school
outright
.
One
teacher
was
transported
by the
Bureau
. There were
two
teachers
;
both
were
white
.

as
