tiles

floor
tiles
are
missing
.
Historical Notes
Montgomery
High
School
, in
Lexington
,
Tennessee
, was
built
from
1948-1950
and
opened
in
1950
.
It
served
African-American
students
in
rural
Middle
and
West
Tennessee
counties
,
including
Henderson
,
Wayne
,
Perry
,
Benton
,
Decatur
, and
Madison
. The
gymnasium
was
built
in
1953
. The
current
school
building
was
built
on the
site
of the
Montgomery
School
, a
Rosenwald
Fund
school
,
built
in
1923
to
replace
the
Lexington
Colored
School
which
was in
another
location
. The
Montgomery
School
became
Montgomery
High
School
in
1927
.
Montgomery
High
School
was in
operation
until
1967
when
all
county
schools
were
desegregated
. The
school
building
remained
a
part
of the
community
and
served
as a
community
center
run
by the
Alumni
Association
. In
1997
, the
gymnasium
was
renovated
and
renamed
Montgomery-Bond-Robinson
Community
Center
.
Montgomery
Head
Start
uses
a
portion
of the
original
school
building
.
