Free
Hills
Rosewald
School
was
built
from
1929
to
1930
.
It
is
a
school
for
African
Americans
constructed
from a
fund
from
Sears
,
Roebuck
&
Company
magnate
Julius
Rosenwald
.
Like
many
other
Rosenwald
schools
,
Free
Hills
represented
a
new
higher
level
of
commitment
by
state
and
local
officials
to the
education
of
African
Americans
,
though
focused
largely
only
on
vocational
education
. The
school
also
acted
as a
central
place
for the
community
to
gather
.
