Historical Notes
Centennial
Park
in
Nashville
is
a
designed
landscape
park
that was
first
created
as a
site
for the
Tennessee
Centennial
Exposition
of
1897
,
celebrating
Tennessee's
admission
to the
Union
. In
1902
the
Exposition
grounds
were
given
to
Park
Board
of the
city
of
Nashville
by the
Nashville
Railway
and
Light
Company
. The
2008
listing
of the
park
on the
National
Register
of
Historic
places
covered
91
of the
132
acres
now
included
in the
park
,
along
with
29
contributing
features
,
including
numerous
buildings
,
sculptures
and
memorials
. The
most
notable
architectural
element
in the
park
is
the
full-scale
replica
of the
Parthenon
,
which
was
originally
constructed
for the
Centennial
Exposition
and then
reconstructed
as a
permanent
concrete
structure
between
1920
and
1931
. The
park's
evolution
over
time
mirrored
new
ideas
and
trends
for
public
recreation
. The
park
grounds
,
buildings
and
features
have been
maintained
for
more
than
one
hundred
years
,
resulting
in a
large
urban
park
that
continues
to be
central
to
life
in
present-day
Nashville
.
