Historical Notes
In
2005
and
later
in
2009
, the
Main
Street
program
of
Greenwood
,
Mississippi
worked
to
identify
possible
landmarks
associated
with
both
the
civil
rights
movement
and with
blues
music
. The
Wesley
United
Methodist
Church
was the
most
important
building
since
it
was
largely
the
headquarters
for the
local
movement
there for
decades
. The
church
built
the
city’s
first
gym
for
African
American
students
and also
maintained
a
community
library
for
African
Americans
.
Finally
, the
building
in the
Money
community
that
once
housed
Bryant
Grocery
and
Meat
Market
serves
as a
reminder
of the
gruesome
murder
of
Emmett
Till
in
1955
, an
event
that
invigorated
the
civil
rights
movement
.
