This black and white engraved sheet contains a printed message bearing witness to the scholarship and deportment of a student at the Columbia Female Institute. Under the image are the names of artist and engraver: Croome, del. and Frank Pease, sc. |
Historical note |
Columbia Female Academy, which was affiliated with the Episcopal denomination, was one of Tennessee's most important schools for young women in the antebellum period. This diploma, awarded to Alice Watkins Gee on June 28, 1849, bears the signature of F.G. Smith, Rector, and James H. Otey, Visitor, as well as trustees Lucius, George, and Will Polk, and D. Frierson, all of whom were distinguished citizens of Columbia, Tennessee. |
