Historical note
William Gannaway Brownlow (1805-1877) , who was known as "Parson Brownlow " because he had been a circuit-riding minister , was an outspoken newspaper editor in Knoxville , Tennessee at the outset of the Civil War . During Confederate occupation of the city , Brownlow went north on a lecture tour , accompanied by his daughter , Susan .
