This long horizontal banner has two wide red stripes top and bottom, a white stripe with the letters "St. John Guards" in the middle, and a blue square at upper left with eight white stars. |
Historical note |
The flag was made by Miss Anne E. Coleman, Miss Paralee Wood, Miss Helen Wood, Mrs. Fatima Sewell St. John, Mrs. St. John, Mrs. John Abraham Wood, Mrs. Fannie St. John, Miss Jennie St. John, whose names appear on the white stars. It was raised at Woodbury (Tenn.) for a Confederate unit apparently led by a member of the St. John family. The flag was captured at Fort Donelson by the Federal Army. It was later returned to Woodbury. |
