Description
This collection includes photographs and scrapbooks from the papers of Louise Noun (1908-2002) and Mary Louise Smith (1914-1997) . Noun and Smith founded the Iowa Women's Archives , which opened in 1992 . Noun had leadership roles in League of Women Voters , the Iowa Civil Liberties Union , and the Des Moines chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW) . Smith , a political activist at the state and national levels , became the first woman to chair the Republican National Committee in 1974 . Highlights from the Smith papers include photographs of Smith at National Women's Republican Club events , and speaking at the National Republican Convention in 1976 .
