Description |
Browse the collection by "item subject" (e.g., "women" "women in education) or "broad subject" (e.g., "Women -- United States -- History -- 19th Century"). See in particular materials from the Roxana Chapin Gerdine Collection. Roxana Chapin was born in 1833 in Massachusetts, graduated from Mt. Holyoke Seminary in 1854, and married William Louis Crawford Gerdine in 1858. They settled in West Point, Mississippi. The letters from the 1860s document Gerdine's views on slavery and daily life during the Civil War. In a letter from January 1, 1860, she writes about her first Christmas on the plantation, the celebrations of the plantation slaves, and the making of clothes for slaves. Gerdine's letters from the late 19th century document her work with her school, family life, race relations, and the illness that led to her death in 1891. |
